  • October 17: NO SCHOOL
  • October 24-28: Spirit Week!

This Week:

  • Reading and Writing: This week, we focused on the c and k spelling rule. We learned that we use the spelling c when there is a vowel a, o, or u after. If there is an i or y, we use a k to spell the sound. There is a chant we sing in class to help us remember! I have attached a picture of the rule we practiced (we made it fun with cats and and kites) to this post!
  • Math: We practiced how to choose and efficient addition strategy. The strategies we discussed include drawing a picture, starting with the bigger addend and counting on, finding a smaller group (e.g. for 5+6 use 5+5 and then add one), and using a math tool like a number rack or tens frame.
  • Science: We have completed learning about five body systems including: circulatory, muscular, skeletal, nervous, and digestive. We also wrote a sentence about each one in our writing journals.
  • Social and Emotional Learning: This week, our focus was on identifying feelings. We talked about how to look at a friend's facial features and body language to identify an emotion. You may practice with us at home here: Home Link.

Friday folders: I have finally got this process up and running! Today, your student received a yellow folder with their name on it. You will see the folder is labeled on the inside. One side says "Bring Back" and the other says "Leave at Home." I am sending home some of their spelling work, a worksheet with some of the body systems we learned (matching systems to their pictures), and a story we read this week. NONE of this is homework, and is not required. The science worksheet says Assessment, but we are not using it as an assessment! If your student does not have their spelling work in their folder, this means they were absent or working with another teacher and do not have it.

iStation Testing Results: As we finish up our second iStation testing period, I would like to share some of the testing results and information with you. Some students are still finishing. Please stay tuned for more to come!

Inside Recess/Days: Some of our lovely teachers are planning ahead to colder weather, and looking to enhance our inside recess for all students. They created an Amazon Wishlist here: Southmoor Inside Days. Any donations are much appreciated. Thank you!

Library: Library books will be due back next Thursday, October 13. You may send them in earlier than that date is your child is done with their book. If your child forgot their book, we can ask Mrs.Chavez to check one out next week as she does not have library open on Fridays.

Specials: Next week, we have Art with Mrs.Whitsoe!
