***4th Grade Newsletter***
Hello 4th Grade Families,
This week students practiced conversation skills. They practiced asking questions to get conversations going, asking follow up questions to keep conversations going, AND learned about what unintended message interruptions send. Through both role playing and experimenting at home, students realized that when we interrupt (even though it might be for positive reasons like excitement or connection) we often send a rude or disrespectful message to the person we are talking to. Thank you for extending this learning at home with your children’s “interruption experiments.”
General Updates:
Conferences - Families will meet with their child’s homeroom teacher this year. Teachers will be prepared to speak to strengths and next steps across content areas. For your convenience (as we know schedules can be tricky), you will also have the option to either meet in-person on October 12th, or virtually on the evening of October 13th. If these times do not work, please email your child’s homeroom teacher and we will find a time to touch base. Please use the following sign-ups to secure a time and only sign up for one time with your child’s homeroom teacher. Thank you!!
Homework Reminder:
- Literacy reading log homework - Friday check-in
- Math homework - Monday check-in
- Home Connections pages for the next week: 1-4
Chromebooks/Headphones - Please make sure your student is charging their chromebook every night and check in to make sure they have working headphones at school!
Asbury Backpack Program - Do you know a family that might benefit from the backpack program? We will start sending backpacks home on September 30th. Asbury has a community assistance fund and backpack program to help those families in our community who could use a little over the weekends with food. On Fridays families are provided a backpack of food at no cost. If you would like to become part of the program please apply HERE!
Academic Updates:
Literacy - Students really connected to the experiences of both poet Nikki Grimes and her fictional character “Gabby” in Words with Wings this week. They also had an amazing opportunity to learn from the poet Tresha Faye Haefner on a google meet call during class. Students asked questions about Tresha’s inspiration and about how to write poetry. They have been eagerly writing poems in their journals, so feel free to explore those together. We had a busy week and also used feedback and proficiency criteria to improve student writing skills!
Next week, students will choose mentor poets to study and write about. They will learn about a poet’s inspiration and will write about what makes their poet’s work unique. They also continue to write their owns poems in preparation for our poetry performance on November 17th (Look for Save the Dates that are coming home today).
Math - We started Unit 2 this week and reviewed the concept of multiplication, showing our understanding with models: number line, ratio table, array, area model, and skip-counting. We also reviewed how to practice multiplication facts with Math Mammoth. This is a great option for homework!
Unit 1 tests were sent home today - please check in with your student to see how they did!
Science - We were introduced to a second type of converter this week: source converters. These convert energy from sources into electrical energy. We discussed how the hospital in our fictional town could still operate during a blackout and students wrote about ideas for a backup energy source for our school based on what they’ve learned.
Enjoy your weekend!
