Week 7 – 10/07

Week 7 - 10/07

This week in First Grade…PLEASE read this Deet in its entirety! There is a lot of information in this Deet.

News/Announcements:

Literacy:

REMINDER - No School for students Friday, October 14th and Monday, October 17th. Friday is comp day for teachers due to conferences. Monday is a work day for teachers.

Meet and Greet with Ms. Thrope video. We recorded the meet and greet with Ms. Thrope that happened on September 28th.

Halloween Party - More time specific information to come. We will have our all school parade and class party on Monday, October 31st after 1:30 pm.

Homework Reminder - 99.9% of the time, homework packets will always go home on Friday’s with the expectation that packets will be turned back in the following Friday. If for some reason the packet does not make it home, you can always keep track of the daily reading minutes (which is 10 minutes) on a separate sheet of paper. FYI - we make sure that we write each students’ names on their packets so that if we find a packet on the hallway floor after school (which we frequently do),we are able to reunite it with the proper owner.

The wait is over!!!! The parent volunteer sign up is ready! Please click this link to sign up. Please note, that as of now the only content area available for volunteering is in literacy. Once Ms. Thrope is adjusted, we can open up math for parent volunteers.

Asbury Learning Links - This is a one stop shop for students and parents to find and navigate educational links. Just click on grade 1.

Book Orders -

Ordering books through our scholastic classroom code helps to earn free books for our classroom! It also helps teachers to earn points towards classroom supplies and materials.

Please use this link to order books https://orders.scholastic.com/HFZ89. Our class code is : HFZ89 Orders are DUE by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14th!

HOMEWORK: Students will need to read for 10 to 15 minutes daily. Reading could look like students reading to themselves or someone else, or someone reading to them. Either option is fine, because each option is vital in learning to read.

During parent - teacher conferences in October, we will discuss your child’s independent reading level and how to select books.

If you are running low on physical book options, students have access to EPIC. Epic is an online platform that has thousands of books. Information for how to log on is included in the homework packet. Please keep this log in information at HOME. (More information to come.)

This week in OG (phonics) we…

(OG (short for Orton Gillingham) / Phonics is taught in a whole group setting)

  • Both classes are now able to complete a lesson in 23 to 25 minutes! YAY!
  • We worked on solidifying our short vowel sounds (a,e,i,o,u)
  • We worked on our consonant diagraphs such as , TH, SH, and CH.
  • We also touched on beginning blends this week.

This week in Whole Group Reading we…

(Whole group reading is taught in a whole group setting using the Expeditionary Learning curriculum, otherwise known as EL)

  • Some of our whole group time was spent with PBL concepts (see below).
  • We revisited two tool books and discussed their importance and relevance. A Chef’s Tools and My Math Toolbox.
  • Next week we will revisit our Fishbowl Discussions with a new protocol. Can’t wait to share!

This week in Social Emotional Learning - SEL we…

(This is taught in Whole Group through the EL curriculum.)

  • Continued learning about a person’s character.
  • We are taking a deeper dive this week into beliefs and how that shapes people and families and how these beliefs impact our school and community. (See the Social Studies section to see how the PBL books read this week tie into this theme and concept.)

This week in Small Group Reading we…

(Small group reading is where students are broken up into 6 differentiated reading groups based on reading tests and observation. This is where students will receive more individualized reading instruction based on their needs.)

  • Groups continued to meet with Mrs. Bruyere to learn how each group will conduct a reading group and what we will be working on.
  • Next week we will add SeeSaw to the center rotation. (More information to come about SeeSaw next week.)

Math:

  • Mathematicians worked on adding and subtracting to ten with the Number Rack using part-part-whole relationships.
  • Mathematicians revisited using nonstandard units (Popsicle sticks, Unifix cubes, heel-to-toe-steps) to measure the length of various objects around the classroom.
  • Mathematicians took their first assessment which will help gauge their level of proficiency with some of the major concepts addressed in unit 1.

Science & Social Studies:

Our driving question for our PBL is …

Part 1: Driving Question

How does your identity shape and enrich your classroom community?

Part 2: Driving Question

What impact does immigration have on our lives and community?

We kicked off our PBL Unit this week! Both classes began by reading The Family Book by Todd Parr. We had class discussions surrounding that every family is different and that is OKAY! We also discussed that all families have values and beliefs and they may look similar, but also different. We then read the book Same, Same but Different by by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw. We compared and contrasted the two characters in the story, as well as comparing and contrasting the two books too.

  • This week mathematicians acted as Number Rack detectives to help them understand part-part-whole relationships as they solve missing addend and subtraction problems. They explored the relationship between addition and subtraction to help add and subtract with numbers to 20. Students also learned about measuring the length of an object by laying multiple copies of a shorter unit end to end.
  • We have continued using the IXL platform to take real-time diagnostic which gives us up-to-the-minute information on student math knowledge, plus personalized action plans to help each student grow.
  • Please remember there will be two pages of math homework for students to complete this week. It will be due on Friday, 10/14.

PARENTS - IF you immigrated to the US and you would like to share your story with the class, please email us so that we arrange for you to speak to the students.
