This week in literacy was a busy one! We took our October istation test on Tuesday and got to track them in our school trackers. We got to celebrate our strengths and talk about areas where we need to keep working. Their istation reports will be in their data binders and we will look at them together at conferences! We also have continued to work on our RAC strategy and read some fun non fiction texts about some interesting topics! (Ask your student about goats in trees!)
We also had a blast at literacy night! Thanks to all of those who came out and joined us.

Our week was spent completing our unit 1 post test for our addition and subtraction unit. We are moving on to multiplication! We also did STAR math assessments this week in order to prepare for conferences. Students got familiar with MobyMax, an online math program. We also had some fun with origami in block 2 and 3, and learned about having grit when things get tough. (Those paper cranes are tricky to make! But if we practice, we know we will get better and better!) It was fun for students to see the different fractions, symmetry, and geometry within the origami we made.

This week some of your students might have brought home a spooky story for the spooky story contest. This was an optional writing assignment that we began in class but needs to be completed at home. If your student is entering this contest their story needs to be turned in by Thursday, October 27. Let me know if you have any questions about this. I am attaching the slides with more directions.

In Science we started a new unit on Inheritance and Traits. People have many misconceptions about how organisms get their traits and about the role that inherited information and environmental factors play in determining variation in the traits of organisms. This unit addresses these concepts directly by providing numerous opportunities for students to construct an accurate understanding of the influences that inheritance and the environment play in determining organisms’ traits. If you want to bring in a family picture so we can look at your family’s similarities and differences in traits that would be great!
