Weekly Update

Hello first grade families,

Happy Friday! Oh my, another very busy week it has been in the first grade! We had a wonderful week. Please see below for important updates and information.

May 2: CSC & PTO Meeting
May 5: Non-Student Contact Day NO SCHOOL
May 8: End of Year Final iStation Testing
May 9: Community Dine Out- Chipotle
May 11: Southmoor Multicultural Night
May 29: Memorial Day NO SCHOOL

Reading: We focused our literacy work on the three different sound-spellings of the /j/ sound. You can spell the /j/ sound with the letter j, the letter g, or the letters ge. We used example words such as jumping, giraffe, and fringe.

Math: This week, we looked closely at picking an efficient strategy for solving our subtraction problems. We reviewed using base ten blocks, pictures, related addition facts, a 20s frame, and a number line.

Science/Social Studies: We had the chance to explore Earth Day topics during morning meeting this week! We also continued our fairytale exploration during social studies time and focused on identifying the settings, main characters, elements of fantasy, problem and solution, and ending.

SEL: We continued our Bullying and Bullying Prevention Unit. Students learned how the three steps of Recognize, Reporting, and Reporting. Please see the family letter here.

iStation Testing: As a school, we will be testing the 2nd week of May, not the first. We will begin testing on Monday, May 8th. This is the FINAL iStation assessment students will take in their first grade year! We do not test in June. This is a very important final score, as it will showcase all that they have learned in the first grade. Please highly encourage your student and home...maybe even with a special treat or incentive! 😊

Ridwell Campaign- We will be collecting plastic film for recycling by Ridwell, more info on what is included at this link. https://www.ridwell.com/pickup-categories/iPLGbgvM

Weecycle- May 15-19 we are doing a gear drive in support of Weecycle to collect used baby gear including cribs, car seats (form needs to be filled out), swings, pack n plays, strollers, other gently used. Baby items. Clothes 0- 4T, diapers and formula. The Weecycle Bus will be at school on Friday May 19 so we can fill the bus!

Southmoor Multicultural Night: Southmoor Multicultural Night Celebration is back! Mark your calendars, the event will be on Thursday, May 11, from 5:30 to 7pm. Fill your passport as you visit country tables, enjoy music and tastes of food from around the world, visit craft stations, enjoy entertainment, view a multicultural Fashion/Flag Show with Southmoor students, and more! And, for the first time, this event will be a part of a Multicultural Week celebration at Southmoor. Please see my previous post (Tuesday) for more details, sign ups, and more!

Library: We visit Mrs.Chavez for check out in the library May 4th!
