Sexual Health

I wanted to give you a quick update on our health unit. We have now learned the names of all of the reproductive parts, the different ways a body changes during puberty, and how to make healthy decisions. Next week we will be finishing our unit.

I can already hear the kids letting out a giant sigh of relief.

We will end with lessons on pregnancy, consent and STDs. We also will do a question and answer session the last day.

Some important things to talk to your kids at home about or just to be aware of:

  1. What to do when they start thier period or have a nocturnal emission. Both topics filled up the question jar. The questions were mostly logistics. How to clean up messes. For girls, what to buy and where they should keep supplies.
  2. Take your kid shopping for razors, deodorant, face acne wash, and feminine products. You don’t have to buy anything yet, but just showing them different products can make them feel more at ease.
  3. We don’t talk about any contraceptions, birth controls, miscarriages (mostly because the pregnancy stuff is very surface level since they go more in depth next time they get health in middle school) and I didn’t mention the HPV vaccine since it will be something that comes up at a well visit check in a few years. These things you will need to discuss with your children on your own if you so choose.

Again, have a wonderful weekend. No pressure, but I have 29 kids in a small room, so deodorant couldn’t really hurt as the weather starts to get warmer!
