Hi Families,
This morning we watched an animated commercial about three different animals using teamwork to stay safe (the penguins used teamwork to avoid getting eaten by the orca, the ants used teamwork to avoid getting eaten by the anteater, etc). We had a conversation about what teamwork is, what it looks like, and what it sounds like. The kids noticed that in each video snip there was someone who was the leader (or helper) who was organizing and guiding the group to stay safe. Their job/homework is to think about what they know about leaders (or helpers). We will continue our discussion about what a leader is tomorrow.
Since it was rainy we had indoor recess. During indoor recess our class gets split into the other two classrooms. Before we broke out into the other classrooms we talked about how we could be helpers while in the other rooms.
We went into lockdown right on our way back from lunch (I hope you got the Deets message from the office earlier today). The kids came into the classroom and went into our lockdown spot. Overall they were calm, patient, quiet, and did a really good job. After awhile I gave them each a book to read so that helped maintain the calm.
I ensured that my body and responses were calm to ensure that their stress level didn't raise. After it was over we met on the carpet and reflected on how it went and moved on. We didn't talk about why we went into lockdown other than that's what we needed to do to be safe. I reiterated that it's my job to keep them safe and I can only do so with their help. Someone brought up the videos we saw and the discussion we had and we talked about how we were using teamwork to keep each other safe by being quiet and calm.
You should be proud of their lockdown behavior today. They did a great job!
Have a good night!
