Week of May 13th
Greetings Stellar 3rd Grade Families!
This week, students wrote, edited, and began publishing letters to their 4th grade teachers. Their peer editing skills are improving as they are learning to write in a five paragraph format. Also in writing, students began to craft a five paragraph opinion essay about water conservation using evidence from various articles and books we have been reading. They will use these essays to create a public service announcement about water conservation.
In math we are continuing to practice our multiplication facts and explore probability. We will begin constructing bridges next week using various materials and testing our bridges' capacity for weight bearing. (On that note, if anyone has a bathroom scale and a kitchen scale that I could borrow, that would be wonderful! I would love to borrow two of each Monday through Friday!)
In social studies, we have been learning about personal financial literacy. Students created products to sell to each other and we had our first market today! Some of the most popular items were stress balls made from balloons and flour, bookmarks, mandala drawings, bracelets, temporary tattoos (sorry in advance if your child comes home with some interesting art adorning their hands or arms today!), paper pack-mans, and origami. Students are learning first-hand about supply and demand, budgeting, cost vs. profit, and scarcity. They had to create their own business plans and collaborate with each other extensively throughout this project.
Our fun run was a huge success! Thanks to everyone for supporting it and coming out to see students run.
I hope you have a great and restful weekend!
Best,
Olivia
